Using the clipboard with parts, compound parts, and components

When copying a family member to the clipboard, it can be pasted into any compatible family. When copied, it pastes as a “Copy of Member” and does not overwrite the original member. Paste into a different family, and it pastes with the original family member name.

When family members are copied to the clipboard, they retain the family and file information about their parents. For example, when a door is copied to the clipboard, the copy retains the family of Doors and the *.xml file of the original part. This prevents any confusion about the upper levels of information for the part during the paste operation. When the copy of the door is pasted into an *.xml file containing a family of Doors, the Family/Part Editor recognizes the copy as a member of the Doors family, then pastes it into the correct family, and updates the name of the *.xml file with the name of the new *.xml file. When the copy is pasted into an *.xml file that does not contain a family of Doors, then the Family/Part Editor creates a family of Doors and pastes the part into it. When the copy is pasted into a location where the part itself is not a copy, then the name pastes as the original part. When pasted into a location where a part having the same name exists, the part pastes as “Copy of part.”

Parts cannot be mixed with compound parts or components. So a part cannot be pasted from clipboard into a compound part family.
